A Journey of Faith: The Story of St. Pius X Parish
In the heart of Forked River, a remarkable journey began in 1951 with the establishment of St. Mary’s of the Pines, a mission church birthed from the dreams of just 35 Catholic families in Lacey Township. Guided by the dedicated Fr. Alexander A. Burant, then pastor of St. Mary’s in Barnegat, this community nurtured its faith as Fr. Burant traveled tirelessly between the two mission churches.
The vision of a thriving parish took a significant step forward in 1953 when ground was broken for the church, which would be dedicated on October 17, 1954. On June 15, 1961, St. Pius X officially became a parish, with Fr. Burant serving as its first pastor.
In 1962, the parish expanded its horizons with the acquisition of property, leading to the construction of a new rectory in 1963. The formation of the first Parish Council in 1969 marked another vital chapter in the parish’s evolving story, as Fr. Burant further invested in the future by purchasing property across from the church that would become the beloved Parish Center.
With Fr. Burant’s retirement in 1972 due to health issues, Fr. William C. Eelman stepped into the role of pastor, and under his guidance, the dream of a Parish Center became a reality, dedicated on September 28, 1974. This center became a hub of activity and connection for the growing community.
On October 8, 1982, Fr. George E. Deutsch became the parish’s third pastor. His leadership saw significant expansions, including an addition to the rectory, garages, and classrooms to enhance the Parish Center. Understanding the needs of elderly and handicapped parishioners, All Saints Chapel was dedicated on September 5, 1987, ensuring everyone could fully participate in the life of the church.
In celebration of the parish’s 40th anniversary, the church underwent a refurbishment and was re-dedicated on November 27, 1994. This revitalization marked a momentous occasion in the parish's history.
In July 1997, St. Pius X embraced the Stewardship model, introducing the community to the principles of Time, Talent, and Treasure. After 17 years of devoted service, Fr. Deutsch retired in 1999. Monsignor John J. Gibbons, led the parish for two years, followed by Fr. Richard Basznianin, who was appointed by Bishop John M. Smith on December 24, 2000, and installed on February 22, 2001.
Over five decades, the parish blossomed from those original 35 families into a vibrant community of over 3,000. Recognizing the need for a new church to accommodate this growth, plans for a Church Complex were set in motion. In August 2003, Bishop Smith approved the building project, and the campaign slogan “Embrace the Challenge” echoed through the community, inspiring all to come together.
The parish joyously celebrated its 50th Anniversary on October 10, 2004, with an outdoor Mass led by Bishop Smith, followed by a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Church Complex. The rich history was honored as liturgical items from the original church—such as the Stations of the Cross, cherished statues, and stunning stained-glass windows—were carefully relocated, linking the past with a promising future.
On October 7, 2006, Bishop Smith dedicated the new Church and Complex, a day filled with joy and gratitude as the parish family celebrated with a beautiful Mass and a weekend of festivities.
Since then, St. Pius X Parish has continued to flourish, boasting over 37 vibrant ministries and organizations that serve our community. Our Religious Education program educates more than 850 children in a dedicated 13-classroom wing, while the RCIA program welcomes new members into the Catholic faith, guided by dedicated adult volunteers.
Our youth ministry, including God’s Little Angels and Faithful Disciples, empowers the next generation through lectors, choir, ushers, and vibrant youth groups.
On October 15, 2016, we marked the tenth anniversary of our new church with the “St. Pius X Family Festival,” a day filled with food, music, and fellowship, culminating in a High Mass on October 16 to give thanks for the blessings that have shaped our community.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to nurturing our parish family, guided by the Holy Spirit, and embracing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The story of St. Pius X Parish is a testament to faith, community, and the enduring spirit of love that binds us all together.
